Frequently asked questions

Why does a used car pay no VAT in Spain?+

When a car is considered used for tax purposes (over 6 months since first registration and over 6,000 km), VAT was already settled at origin and is not paid again. If the car is new, the intra-community VAT mechanism applies: 21% is settled on Spanish registration.

Are the Canaries cheaper or more expensive?+

It depends on the car. The Canaries use IGIC (7–9.5%) instead of VAT (21%), usually favourable on high-value cars. However you add sea freight, DUA and customs handling. On cheaper cars the saving shrinks or can reverse.

What is the registration tax and how much do I pay?+

A one-off tax paid when registering the car in Spain, based on vehicle value and homologated CO₂. Brackets: 0% (up to 120 g/km), 4.75% (120–160), 9.75% (160–200) and 14.75% (over 200).

Is the figure the calculator returns binding?+

No. It is an estimate based on market averages. The real price depends on the specific car, the transport contracted and specific formalities. For a closed price, request a detailed quote.
